Eletek: Navigating the New Direct Vision Standard (DVS) 2024

The unveiling of the Direct Vision Standard (DVS) 2024 on September 4th was a pivotal moment for fleet operators who have been eagerly awaiting this guidance following multiple delays. As of October 2024, vehicles over 12 tonnes with a DVS rating of two stars or less, will be required to adhere to the DVS Progressive Safe System (PSS) specification to operate within London. Fortunately, vehicles equipped by manufacturers adhering to UNECE Regulation 151 and 159, or those with a three-star or higher DVS rating, automatically meet compliance requirements.

Central to the updated specification is the integration of Moving Off Information Systems (MOIS) and Blind Spot Information Systems (BSIS). These advanced safety systems are designed to alert drivers of potential collision threats both in front and on the nearside of vehicles and trailers, expanding upon the blind spot camera, left turn warning sounder, and vehicle signage specifications from 2020.

While the DVS 2024 does not mandate specific MOIS or BSIS technologies, it allows for the use of AI cameras, ultrasonic, and radar systems, provided they align with the required operational specifications. This flexibility enables fleet operators to choose the technology that best fits their vehicles’ needs.
